What the words “Fine Jewelry” mean to me.

I would like to express my concern about the use of the words “Fine Jewelry”. I realize that we all have our own ideas as to what those words mean. However, this short paragraph is about what I as a master craftsman (goldsmith) believe they mean.

I believe that the word “fine” means jewelry that is made of precious metals, specifically gold and platinum. Yes, silver is also considered a precious metal, but I would never set a beautiful one caret diamond in a silver mounting. Silver is a wonderful metal and beautiful pieces of jewelry have been made using it for thousands of years. I am puzzled though when a rock wrapped with silver wire is described as “fine jewelry” and the same words are used to describe an 18KT yellow gold designer ring set with a gem sapphire.

I also believe that “fine” should only be used when describing jewelry that is accented with beautiful precious and semi-precious gemstones. I would never use the word “fine” to describe jewelry made with tumbled rocks, unpolished crystals, leather, rice pearls, or wood.
